It’s hard to scroll Instagram without coming across an influencer — or an ad — promoting Fab Fit Fun’s subscription boxes. After trying Birchbox for nearly two years (and with friends who’ve extensively reviewed other brands), I always wondered: Can it live up to the hype? Do you really get more than $50 worth of stuff, and are they things I’d actually use in my day-to-day life? And how is it different than all those other subscription boxes out there?!

So, when one arrived at my office as part of a feature on women’s subscription boxes, I had to inspect it up-close. You pay about $50 every three months to receive a package filled with a selection of fashion, beauty, accessories and home products, which are typically worth a collective $250 or more. Fab Fit Fun estimated that this season’s box is worth $322 to $368, depending on what you receive.

Each box’s products vary, and you can set certain preferences on the site to get a package that’s tailored more to your tastes. Let’s take a look inside, shall we?

My Fab Fit Fun’s Summer 2018 Box Contents:

  • Summer & Rose Beach Towel — These microfiber towels are supersized, and sand doesn’t stick to them, making them great beach blankets. Despite the fun, rainbow-hued palm leaf print, the fabric felt flimsy (to me) for a beach towel. And I already have too many for my closet, so I gave this one away to a friend.
  • Tarte Tarteist Pro Glow Highlight & Contour Palette — While I would’ve preferred the other option, Tarte’s to-go palette (which features eyeshadows, lusters, and waterproof eyeliner), I’m intrigued to learn the world of contouring … something I’ve totally ignored out of laziness. Until now.
  • Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel — After NYC’s neverending winter, my skin’s looking dull and dry. This peel is both exfoliating and moisturizing, giving me hope that with each treatment, my glow will return — and look better than before.
  • Minor History Post Script Wallet — This micro wallet’s perfect for vacationing, when you’re at a hotel and really just need your key card and some cash. Love the color-block style, too.
  • Coola Face Sport SPF 50 — It’s been gray and rainy in New York for the past week and a half, so I haven’t gotten to try out this sunscreen yet. Admittedly, I have so much sunscreen in my closet that this addition was a minor letdown, but by August, I’ll probably blow through my stash, this tube included.
  • Pier 1 Imports Marble Ring Dish — C’mon, how chic is this?! It’s already on my desk, finally giving my oft-tangled headphones a tidy place to rest (wrapped) when they’re not in use. The gold trim’s a nice touch, too.
  • Foreo Luna Fofo — I’m most excited about this addition — see earlier statement about my lusterless skin — and I’ll have to give a more thorough review a little later. The Luna Fofo is that little blue scrubby-looking disc in the box, and it’s an electronic face cleanser. It’s a new product that’s launching with THIS box, and it’ll soon release an app that syncs with the device to analyze your skin and give you a custom treatment plan to help you get your glow on. I’m all about that.
  • ERTH Tu Y Yo Ring — This funky, 14k gold-plated ring reminded me of a septum piercing for royals when I first unboxed it (seriously — it’s a gold semicircle with a freshwater pearl on each end). Then I slipped it on, and I’ve been wearing it daily ever since. The ring’s negative space is unexpected and sleek, and you hardly notice it’s there.

Will I use everything in this box? Honestly, probably not. But is it worth $50, for what I WILL use regularly? Absolutely. The Luna Fofo alone is worth $89, so it’s like getting a serious discount on the device — and scoring a bunch of extras for free. (Though, full disclosure, this box was given to me for free.) Plus, my friends don’t mind being gifted with what I know I won’t use. Marie Kondo would be proud.
