If you have a penchant for liking dessert pics and staking out new bakeries to try out, you’ve probably seen New York’s Funny Face Bakery cross your feed. As someone who plans out Bluey cakes and Peppa Pig treats for her kid’s birthday (or just a random Tuesday), their take on pop culture cookies immediately grabbed my attention. I mean, have you seen Kim K crying? Or this Harry Styles V-Day cookie? Or pizza rat?! (Of course, none of these list their names, but…the resemblance is uncanny.)
So, if you’re in the city, is it worth a trip? Here’s our honest review.
What’s on the Funny Face Bakery Menu?
Funny Face Bakery sells a variety of cookies: its decorated (frosted) sugar cookies, its softball-sized Gooey cookies, and smaller versions of the Gooeys known as Cuties.
How Big Are Funny Face Bakery Cookies?
The decorated cookies are about the size of your hand (fingers outstretched), while the Gooeys follow the tradition of today’s massive, mounds of cookies, weighing in at six ounces apiece. (They’re more like the size of your fist.) The Cuties are a little bigger than half the size of a Gooey.
How Much Do the Cookies Cost?
Expect to pay $24 for a dozen Cuties, $6 for a Gooey, and anywhere from $11 to $16 for a decorated cookie, depending on its intricacy.
What Do the Decorated Cookies Taste Like?
Some royal icing-frosted cookies can taste like sugar-coated cardboard; thankfully, these cookies are surprisingly soft, with solid vanilla flavor. There’s still a crispness and crunch to them, but I’ve never bit into one and worried I’d crack a tooth or anything.
What Do the Gooey Cookies Taste Like?
They’re a bit crisper around the edges than a Gideon’s or Levain cookie, with a gooey, doughy core. Some, like the Choco-Lava Chip, have a molten filling, which adds a nice layer of flavor (and surprise and delight element).
What are my favorite Gooeys to order?
The Choco-Lava Chip (it’s part molten lava cake, thanks to its fudgy ganache interior, with the richness of a brownie and the crisp edges of a chocolate crinkle cookie) and classic Chocolate Chip (the dough has great caramelization, and the chips are more milk chocolate-y than some of the competition).
What’s the Wait Like?
Lines tend to be shortest in the late afternoon—about 3 to 5 p.m.—on weekdays. (In fact, when visiting the Lafayette shop on a Thursday this February, there was only one other person ahead of me.)
Where Is Funny Face Bakery Located?
There are two shops at the moment, both in Manhattan:
- 6 Fulton Street at South Street Seaport
- 319 Lafayette in NoHo
The Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?
Funny Face Bakery is an experience. If someone has a milestone birthday, a major promotion or needs an unexpected pick-me-up, shelling out $14 for a cookie so epic you want to frame it can be worth it. (Better than a mug they’ll enjoy a couple times then donate when their cupboard gets too crowded a year later.)
The Gooeys are absolutely worth it. I’d say make a pit stop during the off hours, admire all of the decorated cookies—because they’re art—and treat yourself to a Gooey cookie you and a friend can split (if you’re feeling generous). It’ll be a memorable detour to uplift your day.
