Lately, I’ve noticed a string of thought-driven, semi-boho (and, perhaps, largely Anthropologie-inspired) shops popping up, and I couldn’t love them more. I like finding presents with personality; things that speak to me and have a message behind them, a story to tell. That’s how I feel about these brands, which have become my go-to’s when looking for unexpected gifts for people. Or, you know, my own #treatyoself moments.
Altar’d State
Often, faith-based stores are a little too treacly sweet and buttoned-up for my tastes (even my prudish inner Sandra Dee). I like this store’s relaxed, come-as-you-are vibe, with its breezy sundresses, cozy sweaters and hand-lettered signs, which are just as likely to quote song lyrics as it is Scripture.

Sugarboo & Co.
The shop deems itself a “dealer in whimsy,” which is what initially hooked me — then I stopped inside, and fell in love with many of the quirky, unconventional (as in, not the same ol’ “love, laugh, live” motivational signs you see everywhere) and straight-up freaking cute designs.
Brightside Boutique
I’m not all rainbows and sunshine, and this store spoke to my unabashed love of snark. With nameplate necklaces that read “savage” and edgy, Quay sunglasses alongside Jac Vanek tees, it’s got everything I need to feed my Sour Patch Kid side.
Take a look.
Evil Queen
Finally, scented candles that exemplify real life. Cucumber melon and brown sugar-vanilla are great and all, but Evil Queen’s scents will make you smile every time you get a whiff. Each description is just as awesome as the scents themselves, like Spring Cleaning, a mix of juniper, forest greens and mental breakdowns, or Hangover Cure, a triumphant blend of donuts, sprinkles, and #neverdrinkingagain.

Earthbound Trading Co.
Go full hippie with this line of bohemian baubles, gauzy dresses, Himalayan salt rocks, and other tchotchkes meant to help you express your free-spirited side. Don’t miss the jewelry (particularly the long necklaces, chandelier earrings, and ornate bangle bracelets), and the jewelry boxes.
