Hands down, the biggest thrill of the VMAs is its sheer unpredictability. The show’s big, milestone moments can earn a celeb at least a few days’ worth of PR — see: Lil’ Kim’s strategically placed seashell ensemble in the late ’90s, Britney dancing with a boa constrictor in the early 2000s, Miley Cyrus introducing the world to manic teddy bears and twerking just two years ago — so almost every guest treats the night as an evening to go ALL OUT.

Naturally, that makes for some great fashion moments, too. Some become instant Halloween costumes (cough, Gaga’s meat dress and Miley’s teddy bear leotard, cough). Some set trends.

Here are the VMA looks that set the stage on fire — at least in my mind:

5. Ciara’s Fierce Frock

Normally, I’m not big on fringe, but Ciara owns this look, and it’s completely different from everything else on the red carpet.

4. Demi Lovato’s Edgy Outfit

The formfitting cut and geometric designs on this pink dress keep it from skewing cutesy.

3. Cara Delevingne’s Everygirl-Esque Style

The Paper Towns actress probably has the most mainstream, real-girls-could-wear-this look out of everyone on the red carpet. Mini dress, skinny ankle-strap heels, flipped hair — it works.

2. Taylor Swift’s Elizabeth Taylor-Retro Vibe

Okay, so Tay Tay didn’t exactly rock this look during the show, but she did premiere her “Wildest Dreams” music video, which featured a very Liz Taylor style.

1. Vanessa Hudgens’ Boho Princess Look

Bow down. She looks like a woodland goddess, and I can imagine we’ll see even more messy, half-back hairstyles and blush-colored dresses in the months to come.

Disclaimer: Please note that Nate had nothing to do with this post. He’d probably want me to mention that, since he has zero interest in what celebrities do, and especially, what they wear. I’d like to get to that level, but I’m still dazzled by gobs of sequins and hair extensions. -Candace
