The 5 Best Foods I’ve Tried In 2018 (So Far)

For the past three years at Delish, my whole job has revolved around finding (and sharing) the most outrageously good, over-the-top foods and drinks a person could ever want. Today marks the start of a new chapter, as I join the new HouseBeautiful.com as the brand’s deputy editor. I don’t see my obsession with snacking my way around the world slowing down anytime soon (just expect more of it on this site, since I don’t have that outlet anymore!). In honor of that insatiable quest for the ridiculous — and ridiculously delicious — here are the top five things I’ve tried so far this year. They’re worth the road trip. Promise.

5. Cubanito Burrito, Bodega in Miami

This Miami taco joint’s as well known for its food as it is the speakeasy bar in the back, but what will bring me back again and again is their twist on a Cuban sandwich, served as a burrito. The pickled onions and Dijon mustard have just the right amount of tanginess to cut through the salty-smoky blend of roasted pork and bacon. It’s insane, in the best way.

4. Belly Of The Beast Burger, Truffles N Bacon Cafe in Las Vegas

Belly Of The Beast Burger

Talk about a showstopper. You can only eat this behemoth, 10-pound burger by the slice — and about 12-14 of your closest friends. It’s four pounds of beef topped with two-inch-thick strips of pork belly, tons of cheese, runny fried eggs, and an unbelievable hash made out of tater tots, jalapenos, tomatoes and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. It sounds all kinds of wrong, and for your arteries, it is, but OH, how shockingly good it tastes. This sandwich lives up to its larger-than-life hype — something I can’t say about most stunt food.

3. Millionaire’s Bacon, First Watch (various locations)

Millionaires Bacon

Just because this is a Southern chain doesn’t mean its food isn’t legit. First Watch is my go-to breakfast spot, particularly when I’m craving pancakes (Banana Granola Crunch FTW). Recently, though, the shop won me over with its Millionaire’s Bacon. I tried it for the first time in 2017, but it wasn’t until this year that I got to share the wonder that is this sticky-sweet, smoky-with-a-hint-of-cracked-pepper wonder with coworkers. They were instantly hooked.

2. The Dinner BBQ Buffet, Conestoga Ranch in Bear Lake, Utah

Conestoga Ranch Dinner

While traveling Buick’s Oregon Trail earlier this year, we ate at steakhouses and Yelp-favorited restaurants every night as we drove from Denver, CO, to Portland, OR. But none of them could hold a candle to Conestoga Ranch’s dinner at its Campfire Grill restaurant. Yes, it’s served in a giant, canvas-walled tent of sorts at this glamping resort, but don’t let it fool you: The BBQ is obscenely tender, and the sides are even better. The cheese grits were thick without being clumpy (or a gloopy cheese ball); imagine polenta’s answer to mac and cheese. That and the tangy, bacon-studded Brussels sprouts became the part of the trip I thought about for days afterward.

1.  24-Layer Chocolate Cake, Strip House in New York/Las Vegas

Chocolate Cake

One of my first big video projects at Delish was recreating the Trunchbull’s cake from Matilda, and as much as I love that ganache-topped wonder, this one might just take the cake. Largely because it has my ideal rich, dark chocolate-ganache-to-cake ratio: 50/50, with every bite a perfect mix of the two. The cake itself is outrageously fudgy, and best consumed with half a dozen friends and a gallon of milk nearby. You’re going to need it.
