I’m quickly becoming a TikTok convert, particularly when it comes to surprising food hacks. One in particular, though, has really come in handy lately: a mess-free trick for juicing lemons in no time. You squeeze out a ton of juice, you don’t have to worry about getting seeds in said juice and it doesn’t require any special gadgetry that will clutter up your kitchen drawers. It all comes down to following three simple steps.
How to Juice a Lemon Without Making a Mess
- Roll the lemon along the table to help break up the membranes inside the fruit, so it’s a little softer and easier to juice.
- Using the tine of a fork or the pointed end of a chopstick, stab a small hole in one end of the lemon. (For best results, try the end opposite the stem.) Poke the chopstick—or a straw—about three-fourths of the way up the lemon, without going through the other side. This creates a channel for the juice to easily pour out.
- Hold the lemon over a bowl and squeeze out the juice. If the lemon’s a little tough, you may need to knead it with your fingers before squeezing.
Confused? Check out the video below from nutritionist Jacqui Baihn to see how it’s done, then make yourself a lemon-garlic-parmesan kale salad. With a glass of lemonade on the side, of course.
