As a kid, the words “St. Petersburg” made me cringe. That’s largely because any time they were mentioned, it meant my brother, sister and I would be tagging along with my mom as she spent hours in a government building filing permits for work. Blecch.
And, at the time, that was all downtown St. Pete had to offer. That, and dollar hot dogs from street vendors.
When I recently headed back to check out my sister’s dorm at USF St. Pete, as well as my friend Meghan’s new bungalow, I was stunned. My, St. Petersburg, you’ve changed. In all sorts of amazing and delightful ways, but what’s truly stunning is the street art. More than 30 murals are within one block of Central Avenue, and we’re not talking a rebellious 15-year-old’s haphazard tagging — each one is a work of art.
Get a glimpse of these masterpieces in this short video, and don’t be surprised if you start Googling the ‘burg afterward:

Are these all the work of one artist, or were their multiple artists involved?
Great question. There are several artists who have painted murals in St. Pete. You can find them listed here: http://www.tampabay.com/specials/2014/graphics/murals/
